MARTYN BREWSTER This is an exhibition of monoprints to mark the recent publication of ‘Martyn Brewster, Prints 1975-2007’ by Vivienne Light and Simon Olding, published by Canterton Press. A beautifully illustrated hardback book that concentrates on the abstract silkscreen monoprints Martyn has been making for over thirty years.

Martyn lives and works in Dorset, producing paintings, drawings and prints on landscape or abstract themes. He has had major retrospective exhibitions at the Russell Cotes Art Gallery and Museum (1997), the Royal West of England Academy (2001) and the Study Gallery Poole (2003). He has won numerous awards and has works in private, public and corporate collections worldwide. He featured in Vivienne Light’s book ‘Re-inventing the Landscape contemporary painters in Dorset’, and recently ‘Fifty Wessex Artists’ Evolver Books.

CHRIS CARTER ‘My first pots were made using clay I had previously been ploughing on a farm in the Midlands. Those rich clay soils were the early catalyst for my stoneware pots. More recently I have become more closely involved with the landscape of Cranborne Chase in Dorset. It’s the very marrow in the backbone of these disparate landscapes that I seek out. The most prevalent raw materials from these areas are red clay, chalk and flint, all of which I use in my glazes.

In a search for the essence of these landscapes I look closely at ancient artifacts which come to light from the farmers plough each year. They open up new horizons with their own secret origins, while deeper excavations reveal time-lines which help map out our earliest beginnings.’( Chris Carter 2008)
